FISHING GUIDE: Boneski Lures

The 5” Boneski Jerkshad is a versatile soft bait designed for New Zealand saltwater predators. Its profile, tail action, and durability make it deadly from the rocks, wharf, or boat—shallow to deep.

Recommended Jig Head Sizes

Choosing the right jig head is critical. Match depth, current, and drift speed.

Shallow / Light Current (2–8m)

  • Jig head: 1/4 oz – 3/8 oz

  • Hook size: 3/0 – 4/0

  • Use when: Fishing harbours, estuaries, calm inshore areas, or slow drift

Mid-Depth / Moderate Current (8–20m)

  • Jig head: 1/2 oz – 3/4 oz

  • Hook size: 4/0 – 5/0

  • Use when: Standard boat fishing, channels, reef edges

Deep Water / Strong Current (20m+)

  • Jig head: 1 oz – 1 1/2 oz

  • Hook size: 5/0

  • Use when: Deep reefs, fast drift, offshore structure

Tip: Use the lightest jig head possible that still reaches the bottom—this keeps the jerkshad action natural

Target Species & How to Fish Them

Snapper

  • Where: Sand, mud, reefs, channels, foul

  • Retrieve:

    • Cast, let it hit the bottom

    • Slow lift → drop → pause

    • Small hops and long pauses trigger bites

  • Key tip: Most hits happen on the drop—watch your line.

Trevally

  • Where: Harbours, current lines, reef edges

  • Retrieve:

    • Slow, steady retrieve with subtle twitches

    • Keep the bait just off the bottom or mid-water

  • Key tip: Downsize jig head slightly for a more natural glide.

Kingfish

  • Where: Reefs, pins, structure, bait schools

  • Retrieve:

    • Faster retrieve with sharp rod lifts

    • Rip it up from the bottom and let it flutter down

  • Key tip: Use heavier jig heads to keep control and prevent them busting you off structure.
